Eleanor Pennington and James Pennington
Eleanor Pennington and James Pennington were mother and son. Eleanor was James’s primary emotional anchor through childhood, his father’s recurrent medical crises, the family’s move from England to Baltimore, and James’s development as an actor.
Childhood
Eleanor was attentive to the distinction between a child who needed questions and a child who needed quiet company. She gave James truthful, age-appropriate explanations of Edward’s seizures and health needs and repeatedly told him that his father’s illness was not his fault.
Her psychology training informed her parenting but did not make James her patient. Eleanor worked to let him express fear, anger, guilt, and ambition without interpreting every response as a symptom. She modeled asking for help and accepting practical care, even though she was less consistent about applying that permission to herself.
The family moved from England to Baltimore when James was seven, partly for Eleanor’s opportunity at Johns Hopkins Hospital and partly for the city’s specialized medical resources for Edward. She helped him navigate the move while preserving his connection to his British identity and accent.
Theater and Independence
Eleanor supported James’s theater work, friendships, and eventual independence. She and Edward did not want his father’s disabilities to become a reason James could not pursue his own future. That principle became painful when Edward’s neurological crisis escalated while James was away at theater camp in summer 2021.

Eleanor initially delayed telling James that Edward had been hospitalized while doctors attempted to avoid surgery. Once shunt placement became necessary, she called him. James wanted to come home and blamed himself for leaving despite noticing that his father was unwell.
Eleanor answered him directly: “James. Listen to me. This is not your fault.” She explained that Edward had already been ill, had hidden the severity of it, and had wanted James to go. Her insistence that he remain at camp carried both Edward’s wishes and her determination that fear not close James’s life around his father’s body.
Adulthood
As Edward’s seizures, memory, and processing changed later in life, Eleanor coordinated care and kept James informed. She made space for him to remain a son rather than becoming the family’s sole medical manager. Their relationship continued through James’s acting career and his partnership with Charlotte Hargreaves.
